Our inbox is getting louder lately! More cold emails, more follow-ups, more messages that sound… strangely robotic.
Industry analysts estimate that AI-powered sales platforms pushed 4 to 7 times more cold email into B2B inboxes in 2024 and 2025 than just two years earlier. The typical professional receives over 120 emails a day, and Google and Microsoft have responded with the strictest spam filtering the industry has ever seen.
According to Instantly's 2026 Cold Email Benchmark Report, average reply rates have fallen from 8.5% in 2019 to roughly 3.4% today. That means about 19 out of 20 cold emails are simply ignored.
Digital Ads: Where Nobody Stands Out
Email is only the most visible example. Digital paid advertising has gone the same direction. Most advertisers now run Performance Max and Meta campaigns with AI agents, which handle targeting, bidding, placement, and even creative variations automatically. When every advertiser hands the wheel to the same optimization engines, campaigns converge on similar audiences with similar creative at similar moments. It is hard to stand out in a channel where everyone makes the most sensible and logical decisions in real time.
When doing something well costs nothing, there are not that many ways to outperform your competition. Audiences can feel it, too. Researchers tracking the reply-rate decline point to a trust deficit built up by years of low-effort, AI-generated outreach. People have learned to tune out.
The Channel That Cannot Be Copied and Pasted
So, what now? Where can advertisers and marketers turn to create a truly unique positioning?
Enter… the real world!
We at Spinning Designs have ALWAYS believed in the power of amazing, in-person brand experiences (only slightly biased), but the rest of the world is catching up to the idea of positive associations created from moments of joy and excitement.
Experiential marketing has often taken a back seat in budget priority, treated as a nice-to-have next to measurable digital campaigns. That era is ending fast.
EventTrack, the annual benchmark study from Event Marketer surveying more than 1,000 Fortune 1000 marketers, found that 74% of marketers planned to increase experiential spend in 2025. For 2026, that number climbed to 84% of consumer marketers, with about a third planning increases of 8 to 15%. The same study found 61% of consumers are more inclined to purchase after attending an event. Now, you could NEVER beat that with digital marketing.
A real experience is analog by nature. It cannot be generated, scheduled, or automated into someone's feed. A person standing in front of your booth, spinning a wheel, watching the flapper slow down click by click, is having a moment no algorithm can replicate, and one that is becoming more and more valuable. Real-life moments stay with people longer and stronger than anything that scrolls past on a screen.
What We Are Seeing on Our End
We are positively giddy to witness this shift. The conversations we have with marketers have changed. A few years ago, most questions were about price and delivery date. Now we hear thoughtful questions about the experience itself. What accessories and additional designs enhance the brand experience? What should the prize odds be so winners feel real? How do we train staff to run the game so the line keeps moving and stays fun?
Marketers are thinking from the participant's point of view, and they are trying hard to be genuinely different. We think that is exactly the right instinct for this moment.
Over the next two weeks, we will get practical. Part 2 covers the biggest operational challenge in experiential marketing: scale, with a lesson borrowed from Broadway's golden age. Part 3 digs into something we see every week: what happens when AI-generated designs meet the physics of the real world.
